# Maths is Beautiful!

February 13, 2014

Take a look at this formula:

*e*^{ iπ} + 1 = 0

^{ iπ}

How does it make you feel? Baffled? Intimidated? Indifferent?

If you are a mathematician, this formula is likely to make you feel **enthusiastic**, **inspired** and, well, **happy**. That is because this formula, **Euler's identity**, is a beautiful formula. It brings together the 5 most important mathematical constants: **zero, one,** the imaginary number * i* and the most common transcendental numbers

**e**and

**pi**.

**Frontiers in Human****Neuroscience****reports that scientists at University College London found that the part of the brain responsible for helping us feel emotions - the medial orbito-frontal cortex - was triggered when mathematicians were shown 'beautiful' formulae such as this.**

These formulae elicited the same emotional response as listening to a favourite piece of music or looking at a stunning piece of art.

So, if you want to cheer yourself up, don't reach for the iPod... do some Maths!
